Built in 1832, Open Season Lodge was the first hotel built in the village of Wellington, Ontario. Easily the largest building in the village at that time, it has the spacious dimensions characteristic of early hotels in the much admired "Loyalist" style.

Originally it was called "Wildman's Hotel" and is featured in the Settler's Dream, the book of historic homes in Prince Edward County. It changed hands several times and was named the "Murphy House" between 1914 to 1938, recalling Anthony Good Murphy. Most of the hotels of this era are gone. Today's Open Season Lodge maintains the tradition of the old Wildman's Hotel / Murphy House in Wellington.

The Village of Wellington

The Coolest Spot when the Weather is Hot!

Wellington was named after the Duke of Wellington who defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.

It had originally been called "Smokeville" after the nickname "Old Smoke" given to the village's first white settler, Daniel Reynolds, a fur trader and friend of the local Indians. His restored home may still be seen. It is know as Manor House, a cobblestone home built in 1786.

By the 1850s Wellington offered a full range of stores and services with a population of about 500. The port became the major stimulus for the continuing economic growth.

Visit Wellington to experience the flavour of its past. Its history and old architecture are stimulating. There is something for everyone in Wellington.
